Labour Day reminder: Justice Without Delay — Upholding the Dignity of Labour in the Light of Prophetic Guidance.

In an era marked by rapid economic growth and expanding industries, it is deeply concerning that the fundamental rights and dignity of workers are still frequently overlooked. The timeless guidance of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) serves as a moral compass for humanity, reminding us: “Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 2443)

This profound teaching is not merely a religious instruction but a universal principle of justice, accountability, and human dignity. It emphasizes that the rights of labourers are sacred and must be honored promptly, without exploitation or delay.

Unfortunately, across various sectors—especially among daily wage earners, construction workers, and informal labour—delayed payments, underpayment, and financial insecurity remain harsh realities. Such practices not only violate ethical standards but also undermine the very foundation of a just and humane society.

Timely payment of wages is more than a contractual obligation—it is a moral duty. It reflects respect for human effort, safeguards the livelihood of families, and strengthens trust within the economic system. When workers are denied their rightful earnings on time, it leads to distress, indebtedness, and erosion of dignity.

As a nation striving toward inclusive growth and social justice, it is imperative for employers, policymakers, and society at large to internalize and implement this principle. Legal frameworks must be strengthened, enforcement must be stricter, and awareness must be amplified to ensure that no worker is deprived of their rightful earnings.

Let us recognize that true progress is not measured solely by economic indicators, but by how we treat the most vulnerable among us. Justice delayed is justice denied—and in the case of workers, it is dignity denied.

This is a call to conscience for all stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to fairness, compassion, and accountability. Let us build a society where every drop of sweat is honored with timely and rightful reward.
